It looks like over a quarter of all American have no emergency savings. See this article in the Mercury News from Jim Puzzanghera of the Los Angeles Times:
One thing I did notice is that fewer people say they have no savings than a year ago, plus fewer say they have less than six months earnings saved. So even though more people have fewer than three months earnings saved, that reduction may be attributed to them getting the six months earnings saved. Overall it might be a slight improvement, as some people with no savings are starting to save, and some with three months earnings a year ago now have six months saved.
So the quarter that have no savings is bad, but starting to improve.
