Financial Musings of a Burbank CPA: Social Security benefits for kids

In case you didn’t know, there are many situations where children qualify for social security benefits, including when one or more of their parents are disabled, retired or deceased.  See this article in MarketWatch at the Wall Street Journal by Stephen Williams and see if anyone you know might qualify: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/social-security-benefits-for-kids-2014-06-26 The sad thing is a lot of these benefits are being left on the table by nonapplication for them.  Many people know about benefits for kids under 18 when a parent is deceased, but the other catagories are not being used to their fullest extent.    For financial,  accounting and tax musings, You can count on us to count for you! CPA Financial Musings: About a quarter of Americans have no emergency savings, poll finds

It looks like over a quarter of all American have no emergency savings.  See this article in the Mercury News from Jim Puzzanghera of the Los Angeles Times: http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_26019267/about-quarter-americans-have-no-emergency-savings-poll One thing I did notice is that fewer people say they have no savings than a year ago, plus fewer say they have less than six months earnings saved.  So even though more people have fewer than three months earnings saved, that reduction may be attributed to them getting the six months earnings saved.  Overall it might be a slight improvement, as some people with no savings are starting to save, and some with three months earnings a year ago now have six months saved. So the quarter that have no savings is bad, but starting to improve.       For financial,  accounting and tax musings, You can count on us to count for you!
