With the dividend tax rate raising in 2013, plus the 3.8% tax on investment income looming, some high income dividend recipients got a gift when many large companies paid dividends in 2012 rather than 2013. See this article in USA Today by Matt Krantz:http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2013/01/24/early-dividends-founders-investors/1775173/Of course, small investors probably will not have much effect one way or the other, since taxpayers in the 10 and 15% tax brackets dont pay income taxes on qualified dividends.Remember, for financial, accounting and tax musings,You can count on us to count for you! email bstonercpa@sbcglobal.net phone 818-317-6035 Website www.briantstonercpa.com
CPA Tax Musings: H&R Block Loses Lawsuit Trying to Stop Intuit TV Ads
Those Intuit ads for TurboTax that criticize H & R Block preparers as working as plumbers and salesmen in the off season will continue (I personally don’t think very much of them either, although H & R Block ads don’t really excite me either.) See the results in this article in Accounting Today by Michael Cohn:http://www.accountingtoday.com/news/HR-Block-Loses-Lawsuit-Trying-Stop-Intuit-TV-Ads-65495-1.html?ET=webcpa:e6645:204199a:&st=emailIt is kind of ironic that Intuit also makes my tax software, Lacerte, which is TurboTax with about a thousand enhancements and diagnostics. It is also funny that last year H & R Block ran a series of commercials trashing TurboTax, showing a sandwich maker complaining about filling out TurboTax questionaires (not actually named in the commercial of course) and hoping for the best. This is why you need a CPA or EA, not a franchise or do it yourself system, to prepare your taxes.
