This article in Accounting Today by Mark W. Everson makes some valid points; by passing the tax law they did, Congress has actually gone away from tax simplification (which is a lot harder than just extending old tax law or allowing it to expire):

I don’t think anyone really wants tax simplification; maybe the President’s new budget in a few weeks will show whether he feels the same way.
